Probably a first for Cuba: six selected top groups – a total of some sixty musicians – spent a week in the recording studios in Havana to document the highlights of this century’s Afro-Cuban music.
The roots of Afro-Cuban music are evoked by Afrocuba de Matanzas with great authenticity and vitality in their rendering of Yoruba rhythms and songs which have died out almost completely in Africa today. The Septeto Nacional, founded in 1925, has been constantly rejuvenated by successive generations of the country’s finest musicians. In their music, the legendary wild years of the prerevolutionary era live on. The Conjunto Campesino Cuyaguateje comes from Cuba’s largest tobacco growing region and provides an excellent insight into the rich musical world of rural Cuba. Fiddles, flutes, guitars and percussion are at the centre of Cuba’s finest charanga group Orquesta Sublime. The internationally renowned Septeto Raison specialises in sophisticated acoustic salsa. The Sexteto Ricoson adds new vitality to the traditional son with their breathtaking vocal arrangements.
The recordings and arrangements give a superb introduction into the many musical trends that have emerged on this tropical island in the course of this century.
