Cheba
Bayuba Cante takes us on a fascinating journey from the world of Afro-Cuban music to the Yoruba rhythms and songs of West Africa — with a stop-over in Spain's flamenco culture before returning once more to Cuba. The musicians in the group come from Cuba, Chile, Malta, Holland, Germany, Iran, Turkey, Brazil and Argentina. Their Cheba album not only reflects the cultural diversity within the ensemble itself, but also reveals their shared love of traditional Afro-Cuban music, latin, jazz, funk, flamenco and even Indian music. Traditional Yoruba songs form the basis of their music, which they interpret freely, rearranging them and adding new elements and unexpected musical styles to kindle the spirit of Yoruba culture within a new context. Thanks to their virtuosity, improvisational skills and their electrifying live performances, Bayuba Cante are as highly regarded in Europe as they are in Cuba.
The tracks on this CD were recorded in Cuba. Musicians from Cuba's most famous salsa band NG la Banda and the national ensemble Conjunto Folklorico National de Cuba perform here with Bayuba Cante. Flute, cello, guitar, saxophone, bass, percussion and vocals merge in a funky latin mix. This is a vibrant and highly explosive mixture of superb female vocals, dynamic rhythm, flamenco and breathtaking brass passages — a real voyage of discovery for the year 2000!
