Magou & Dakar Transit

Africa Yewul

We celebrated our 25th anniversary one whole year long with outstanding productions: the demand for the 3-CD package “EMOCIONES”, featuring highlights from our programme, exceeded all expectations; recently, an international jury for fRoots chose Golden Afrique Vols. 1 and 2 as the two best compilations of the year 2005. At the end of the year, the cherry on the jubilee editions cake, so to speak, also came from Africa. When we heard Magou's intense, husky voice for the first time we got that crazy goose-pimple feeling. In the studio, he sang what he felt with eyes closed, and he certainly felt what he sang; listening to his ballad “Gorée”, we all had tears in our eyes: a magical musical experience. Magou is from Senegal. In his songs, some of which are like hymns, he lovingly sings the praises of “Mama Africa”, appeals to his compatriots to have more self-esteem, demands debt relief for that exploited continent, makes fun of the womanisers in Dakar in an Afro-salsa piece, and celebrates the “Lions” after their victory over the French soccer team. Magou is accompanied by his group Dakar Transit, including, as second guitarist Baye Diop, percussionists Dr. Ada and Samson Gassama, on the talking drum Badou Sene, and the kora player Tata Dindin, who is currently mesmerizing audiences in André Heller's show “Afrika! Afrika!”
