Network Medien: passionate encounters over a period of three decades with the magic of our world’s music cultures.
The series WorldNetwork Vols. 1 – 49, produced in close collaboration with the WDR broadcasting company and complemented by Network recordings made, among others, in Brazil, Cuba, Senegal, Australia, has often been called the “basic discotheque of world music”. This series has sold more than one millions CDs worldwide to date.
The Special Edition series presents Network recordings with groups who meantime rank among the highlights at festivals and concerts (and including Esma Redzepova, SambaSunda, Gigi, Istanbl Oriental Ensemble, Tartit, Alim Qasimov, Izaline Calister, Septeto Nacional, Maria Volonté …).
The legendary upright 2-CD anthologies, like Desert Blues, Golden Afrique, Road of the Gypsies, The Diaspora of Rembetiko and The Soul of Klezmer, represent emotional journeys to different music sub-cultures and have become international best-sellers. The same format has been used to acknowledge the life’s work of outstanding musicians and groups, such as Djivan Gasparyan, Sexteto Mayor, Bratsch.
Praise from the press:
“We owe it to Network, that creative smithy in Frankfurt, that other flowers are able to bloom at all in a blustery music market marked by rampant uniformity.” (FAZ);
“Acoustic-sensual pearls for listeners with open ears and alert minds.” (Der Spiegel);
“A veritable treasure-trove of world music.” (Jazzthetik);
“Acoustic journeys of discovery, compiled with intelligence and vivacity and well-documented in the booklets.” (Die Zeit);
“A major achievement for world music.” (Marie Claire);
“The ear on the pulse of time.” (New York Times).
Just recently the culture section of the Frankfurt daily FAZ had this to say about Network: “Admired worldwide and inundated with awards.”
And the fact is that more than half of all Network editions have been awarded international and national prizes:
the Prize of the German Record Critics, the International Sound Recording Prize, 4 clefs Télérama, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Recommandé par Répertoire, Diapason d’Or, Songlines‘ Top of the World, IMC-UNESCO International Music Prize, fROOTS Critic’s Poll: Best Compilation of the Year (several times!).
The Network Medien/Membran Media label most recently released "From the Kasbah/Tunis to Tahrir Square/Cairo – Our Dreams are our Weapons", featuring the soundtracks of the (unfinished) revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt; portraits of Titina, the second grande dame from the Cape Verde islands, and of Urna, that magical voice from Mongolia, as well as "Bande italiane", which presents the wild young Italian brass-band scene.
